The effects of a single freshwater release into the Kromme Estuary. 2: Microalgal response

چکیده
The release of freshwater from the Mpofu Dam in November 1998 resulted in a short-term (6 d) longitudinal and vertical gradient of both salinity and nitrate in the estuary. There was no significant increase in phytoplankton chlorophyll a during the period of the study. The phytoplankton communities were dominated (> 10%) by diatoms and flagellates throughout the study. The average number of diatoms increased significantly from 301 cells·ml, prior to the release, to a maximum of 3 856 cells·ml by the end of the first spring tidal cycle. The average number of flagellates increased from 1 903 cells·ml, before the release, to a maximum of 3 300 cells·ml after two spring tidal cycles. There was no change in subtidal benthic chlorophyll a biomass but intertidal benthic chlorophyll a increased from 35.6 mg·m, before the release, to 63.3 mg·m by the sixth day. The conclusion is that the amount of freshwater released was insufficient to increase the nutrient content of the water to a level that resulted in a significant increase in primary productivity. The length of time that the freshwater influence was present also prevented a significant increase in microalgal growth.

The effects of a single freshwater release into the Kromme Estuary. 3: Estuarine zooplankton response
Natural patterns of zooplankton variability (temporal and spatial) in the Kromme Estuary have broken down due to persistent euhalinity (salinity values above 28‰) throughout the estuary. These conditions occur as a consequence of freshwater retention by a large reservoir. Only 2 x 10 m (<2% of the mean annual runoff (MAR) from the catchment) is allocated to the estuary per annum, and the presen...

In total 17 families comprising more than 29 species of larval teleost fishes were recorded in the Kromme Estuary during the study period. Dominant species included Atherina breviceps, Caffrogobius gilchristi, Diplodus sargus capensis, Gilchristella aestuaria, Glossogobius callidus, Rhabdosargus holubi and Rhabdosargus globiceps. The larval fish catch in the estuary indicated a marine dominance...
متن کاملEFFECTS OF WOOD ON THE GROWTH OF LIGNICOLOUS FRESHWATER FUNGI
The addition of cottonwood and ash sapwood powder to YPSSl2 medium influenced the mycelial growth of 13 species of freshwater lignicolous Ascomycetes and Hyphornycetes. These species fall into three groups with respect to their responses to the presence of leached or non-leached wood powder. Neither wood type showed strong inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth of the species. Leaching di...

Tidal behavior of esturies is more complicated than open seas. It arises from the effects of geometrical parameters. Also other parameter such as wave reflection from the end of estuaries, sieche, bed friction and coriolis forces cause the water level changes in the esturies to be several times as in the open sea. This paper evalutes the effects of gemetric parameters (such as length, wide and ...
متن کاملMicroinfusion of Bupropion Inhibits Putative GABAergic Neuronal Activity of the Ventral Tegmental Area
Introduction: The most common interpretation for the mechanisms of antidepression is the increase of the brain monoamine levels such as dopamine (DA). The increase of DA can reduce depression but it can also decrease the monoamine release because of autoreceptor inhibition. Although bupropion can decrease the dopamine release, there is evidence about stimulatory effects of chronic application o...
